“Set sail for adventure in the all-new direct-to-DVD My Little Pony movie!” When my daughter picked out the DVD case at the local rental store, I felt my heart sink a bit. You have to understand that my only prior experience with the franchise was being forced to watch along with as my younger sisters (who were never known for their taste) gleefully soaked up the distilled awfulness of “My Little Pony Legacy.” I know there’s supposedly an older version of the show that was halfway decent, -Gen 3, I think?- but I’ve never really cared enough to look it up. An opening shot of a heavily polluted ocean floor, combined with a melancholy piano piece and a momentarily sourceless narration promising vengeance against humanity managed to pull me in in literally less than ten seconds flat.
And then the obnoxiously cheerful opening theme nearly pushed me right back out. The keyword here, though, is nearly.
